Type 2 diabetes treatment

Everyone with type 2 diabetes knows that this condition requires a lifetime commitment to treatment. They are also aware that type 2 diabetes treatment is a team effort with a committed community of health professionals. Taken day by day, the treatment of type 2 diabetes need not become an unbearable burden, but instead, a challenge to be faced and overcome.

In addition to a stringently followed dietary plan, type 2 diabetes treatment may involve other significant strategies. Most of these strategies are taken in stride by the team of patient and health professionals as mere steps in the daily process of maintaining good health. Above and beyond a healthy dietary regimen, type 2 diabetics, especially those needing insulin to control their symptoms will keep in mind the following:

•    Exercise, along with a healthy diet are a one-two punch in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
•    Stress causes hormonal imbalances that may interfere with the effectiveness of insulin treatment.
•    Illnesses, a cold or the flu, will also raise hormone levels, causing a corresponding rise in blood sugar levels.
•    Strict monitoring of non-diabetes medications must be maintained by the health team to minimize effects on blood sugar levels.
•    Abstinence of alcohol and sweets is always recommended, but not always adhered to. Moderation is, however, much easier to “digest”.

Type 2 diabetes treatment often means a regimen of medication in place of, or in addition to, insulin treatments. Medications in the treatment of type 2 diabetes include Glipizide,
Metformin, Exenatide, Pramlintide, Pioglitazone, Rosiglitazone, among others. As with all drug treatment plans, the benefits of these medications in controlling type 2 diabetes must be weighed with their adverse effects. Benefits of many of these drugs include promoting weight loss, as well as decreasing triglycerides and promoting “good” cholesterol. Harmful effects include, heart complications, weight gain, an increase of “bad” cholesterol, nausea and diarrhea.
